Region 34 is fully committed to the training and advancement of our Referees. There are numerous opportunities throughout Southern California to get trained as a referee. We will post special classes here as they become available.
Steps to becoming a Referee
There are two separate sets of training that are required to become a referee. 1) Become a certified AYSO volunteer; 2) Take a Referee class
1. How to become a certified volunteer?
- Login to your AYSO account.
- Click on the "Volunteer" tab to the left
- After selecting "Referee", you have to sign and acknowledge various policies
- Adults volunteers are required to complete the following training courses: Concussion Awareness, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, AYSO Safe Have, SafeSport.
- In addition, adults are required to submit a Background Check.
- To access each of the training videos and Background check, you simply check the selection box next to the item and click the "Renew and Update" button. This will automatically open the corresponding training module. For the Background Check, Sterling Volunteers is the entity that performs the background check for AYSO volunteers. Additional information may be required, then you submit for the background check.
2. How to become an AYSO Referee now that you have completed the process to become an AYSO volunteer?
- Click on AYSOU button and find a Referee course for the appropriate age group. For Regional Referee (these referees are able to ref games for 7U-10U) courses, there are 2options for certification
- 1- Full Day in-person course
- OR
- Hybrid Course: 1- Online potion & a 3-hour In-person portion
- The online portion of the course MUST be completed before you go to the class or you will not be allowed to attend
- In either case, there is a test given.
- The In-person test is part of the class
- The Hybrid online version, the test is online
- After completing the AYSO Volunteer process and Referee class and exam, you are a Referee
3. What is the difference between SportsConnect and CGI?
- First, what IS SportsConnect? This is the system AYSO uses to manage all players, volunteers, registrations, certifications, team assignment, etc.
- You probably knew what SportsConnect was, but just didn't think of it by its name. The reason this is semi-important is so that you can understand the difference between this system and our referee scheduling system.
- Second, what IS CGI?
- You probably guessed what CGI is by now, if you didn't know before. This is a completely separate system to manage referee scheduling and game scheduling as well.
- It does have separate logins and this is how we manage all the referees and make sure new referees only see games they are allowed to referee.
- It also allows us to us open up more games for referees that want to upgrade to referee higher level games.
- The main point here is, this is why we have two separate systems.
